Wolfgang Schneiderhan plays = BRAHMS Violin Concerto (rec. 1940) and BACH Chaconne (rec. 1947) - Wolfgang ...
As in DGG's recent 5-CD boxed set of Wolfgang Schneiderhan's (mostly) 1950s recordings in the yellow label’s Original Masters series, this new release from the upscale Japanese Opus KURA label shows how great musical results can be obtained with entirely noble and straightforward means.
His ability to float a phrase high in the lyrical stratosphere is quite extraordinary, as is his command, poise and intonation in fiendishly difficult fast passages.
The first movement cadenza, by Schneiderhan’s teacher Julius Winkler, is the same as that the soloist used in his 1953 recording for DGG, with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Paul van Kempen.

Mozart was the composer said to have a direct compositional connection to God, but with this recent Deutsche Grammophon "The Originals" release, violinist Wolfgang Schneiderhan makes a compelling case that Mozart was not alone.
As listener, you are given a fairly close seat to the stage, with Schneiderhan placed directly in front of the orchestra.
Schneiderhan is one of those rare artists that convey the essence of the music.

The trio carried on after the war, by which time Kulenkampff and Fischer were living in Switzerland and on the violinist’s sudden death in 1948, Wolfgang Schneiderhan took over.
They bind together the sometimes diffuse rhetoric of the opening of the Schumann Trio in D and Schneiderhan’s long-breathed lyricism in the slow movement is attractive, the finale forceful with a good directional pull.

Although a great admirer of the two players as individuals this set is new to me. They were not regular partners on the platform but the two men were brought together by Deutsche Grammophon for the studio recordings.
This is the version in which Schneiderhan uses his own re-writing of Beethoven's cadenzas that he wrote for the Piano version of the Concerto and which make a "and now for something completely different" statement.
Kempff went on to make a highly regarded set of the Sonatas with Yehudi Menuhin in the seventies and these later recordings were later chosen by DG when selections were needed for compilation releases.

Classics Today.com - Your Online Guide to Classical Music
Last year, the Beethoven sonatas cycle by Wolfgang Schneiderhan and Wilhelm Kempff made a timely reappearance in DG's Originals listings, and it's now been followed up by the Brahms trilogy, with the addition of the scherzo from the F-A-E Sonata.
Although their overall timings for individual works are broadly comparable to those of Suk and Katchen, Decca doesn't manage to find room for the F-A-E scherzo on a disc running to 68:15 as compared to DG's 71:17.
But where Suk and Katchen exude contentment and repose, Schneiderhan and Seemann are grappling with bigger ideas, and constantly highlight details and thematic cross-currents in the first two sonatas that seem less well defined in Suk's tastefully executed but less insightful Decca performances.

Stereophile: Recording of February 2003: Beethoven: Complete Violin Sonatas
For the past half century, Deutsche Grammophon has released roughly one cycle of Beethoven's violin sonatas per decade, from Wolfgang Schneiderhan's mono edition and Yehudi Menuhin's stereo remakes (both with pianist Wilhelm Kempff) to the partnership of Gidon Kremer and Martha Argerich to, most recently, Anne-Sophie Mutter's cycle with Lambert Orkis, on CD and DVD.
While each of these cycles boasts unquestionable virtues, all are markedly surpassed by the extraordinary standard set by violinist Augustin Dumay and pianist Maria João Pires in this new set.
In addition, Dumay mirrors Schneiderhan's terse, unvarnished style and Menuhin's lyrical strength and spirituality, with the advantage of a superior, more flexible technique than either of those artists.
