Wolfram von Richthofen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1933 von Richthofen joined the Luftwaffe, becoming one of the commanding officers in the Condor Legion in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War.
Von Richthofen was retired on medical grounds in late 1944.
Von Richthofen was a distant cousin of the German World War I flying ace Manfred von Richthofen, popularly known as the "Red Baron" (who had shot down 80 enemy aircraft before being killed in action in 1918), and the baron's younger brother Lothar von Richthofen, who himself shot down 40 enemy aircraft.

Von Manstein was born Fritz Erich von Lewinski in Berlin, the tenth child of a Prussian aristocrat, artillery general Eduard von Lewinski (1829–1906), and Helene von Sperling (1847–1910).
Von Manstein stayed in the military after the war, and in the 1920s, he took part in the creation of the Reichswehr, the German Army of the Weimar Republic (restricted to 100,000 men by the Versailles Treaty).
Von Rundstedt accepted von Manstein’s plan that called for the concentration of the majority of the Army Group’s armored units into Walther von Reichenau’s 10th Army with the objective of a decisive breakthrough, which would lead to the encirclement of Polish forces west of the River Vistula.

 Gerd von Rundstedt Summary
Gerd von Rundstedt was born on Dec. 12, 1875, in Aschersleben near Magdeburg.
General von Rundstedt had doubts about the survivability of these units without infantry support, and asked for a pause while they caught up; this has given rise to the misconception that the halt that allowed the British to evacuate the Continent at Dunkirk was of Rundstedt's making.
Von Rundstedt was promoted to Field Marshal on July 19, 1940 and took part in the planning of Operation Sealion.

Richthofen's appeals for more aircraft and crews did prompt Hitler to prod Goering and Jeschonnek to scrounge every available airplane in Germany and the occupied countries and dragoon them into service for the airlift.
Von Manstein's understanding was that upon issuing the "Donnerschlag" order, Paulus would simultaneously drive for a link-up with Manstein's force and begin evacuating the 6th Army from Stalingrad.

 Manfred von Richthofen
It was not until 1918 that von Richthofen was flying with his celebrated Fokker_Dr.I triplane, the distinctive three-winged aircraft he is most commonly associated with.
In January, 1917[?], von Richthofen founded a new squadron, the JASTA 11, which ultimately included some of the elite of Germany's pilots, several of whom the Red Baron trained himself in his JASTA 2.
It is also said that the deaths he caused began to cause von Richthofen serious depression, perhaps exacerbated by a wound to the skull he suffered in late 1917 that undoubtedly affected him.

At the time of the Battle of Stalingrad, Hitler was assured by Field Marshall Hermann Göring that the Luftwaffe could supply the Sixth Army by air, and as a result, Hitler denied the request of Field Marshall van Paulus to retreat from the city.
Wolfram von Richthofen, then head of the 4th Air Fleet (Luftflötte 4), tried in vain to overturn this decision to try to supply the entire German Sixth Army by air, without success.
He was a distant cousin of the German World War One flying aces, the siblings Manfred von Richthofen, who was known as the Red Baron and had shot down 80 enemy aircraft before being killed in action in 1918 and his younger brother Lothar von Richthofen who shot down 40 enemy aircraft.

As a military aviator, Wolfram Freiherr von Richthofen participated in a leadership role in two of the most important events in the shaping of World War II perceptions of the vulnerability of cities to air attack.
Von Richthofen clearly understood the integration of fighter, level bomber, and dive bomber aircraft in what today's air combat planners term strike packages, and was a pioneer in the use of concentrated, high tempo air operations against a single target.
After successful service in a variety of command positions in World War II and promotion to Field Marshal, Freiherr von Richtofen was transferred to the reserve in 1944 as a result of a cerebral tumor, and died in a prisoner of war camp in 1945.

Unknown to anyone at the time, May's target was Wolfram von Richthofen, cousin of Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron.
Watching von Richthofen chasing May, Roy Brown decided to give chase as well, and soon the three planes were descending to rooftop height just west of no man's land.
Richthofen eventually broke off his chase, but it appears he may have been confused as to where he was, because when he "turned for home" he flew over some of the most heavily defended portions of the Somme.

On 26 April 1937, 100 aircraft of the German Luftwaffe's Legion Condor, under the command of Major General Hugo Sperrle with Lieutenant Colonel Wolfram von Richthofen serving as his chief of staff, conducted a three hour bombing attack on the city of Guernica, then held by the Loyalist Republican Army.
Lieutenant Colonel von Richthofen is reported to have stated that the Renteria bridge over the Mundaca River at the edge of the town was the target in an attempt to cut off the retreat of Republican forces.
The failure to hit the bridge has been widely cited by popular commentators as proof that the intent of the attack was to destroy the town, not the bridge.

John Sponauer - Close Air Support in WWII: The Luftwaffe
Richthofen's fame came largely later in France and Poland, and ironically, while he is often credited with the development of dive bombing tactics for the Ju87 Stuka, he was not an early proponent of the aircraft.
While there was never a doubt of whether the Luftwaffe would support the army or not, Richthofen's original preference was on the status quo theory of effective strikes, low-level strafing and bombing using He51 and Hs123 fighters and coordinated by liaison teams in the German Army.
General von Richthofen, who had opposed the massive airlift into Stalingrad, consolidated and reorganized Luftwaffe operations in the south under one command.
