Entombed - Remnants of Reason   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
After Wolverine Blues, and their parting with Earache/Sony, everyone was anxious to see what Entombed would do next.
Evidently Entombed decided to release the album under their own label to ensure artistic integrity, (what DID happen on Wolverine Blues???) evidently for good reason, To Ride is ten times better than their previous venture.
This may be due to the fact that no one was expecting another Clandestine, but To Ride is riff-o-matic death metal at it's finest.

  The Wolverine Orchestra
Wolverine members obviously recognized that Beiderbecke was the band's outstanding soloist--he is in the forefront on records.
The Wolverines were first to cut two numbers that would become jazz standards: "Copenhagen," composed by Midwest bandleader Charlie Davis, and "Riverboat Shuffle," composed for the band by a young Hoagy Carmichael, who was then a law student at Indiana University in Bloomington and a friend of the musicians.
The third and final reference to the Wolverine Orchestra in the trade journal is in the November issue, which announced the December release of"Tia Juana" and "Big Boy" on Gennett 5565.

Wolverine Blues certainly isn't worthy of being grouped with them for appreciation...
No, I wouldn't put Wolverine Blues even close to those two albums either.

 Jelly Roll Morton (3)
He proved that what he said was true the way he always had: he sat at the piano and played, song after song, songs to go with his many stories, songs that could only have come from a man that had been everywhere in the country and seen everything there was to see.
The unique sounds that were embedded in his treasure trove of music were a virtual history of the birth of jazz, everything from vaudeville and theatre music to marches, opera, blues, ragtime, and anything else that was in the air.
Morton was unhappy that Melrose changed the title of his "The Wolverines" to "Wolverine Blues", particularly since the song is in no way a blues number, but the incident passed.

This song was performed by both the New Orleans Rhythm Kings (NORK) pictured on the cover and Jelly Roll Morton.
The Spikes Brothers also wrote "Someday Sweetheart." This sheet is quite rare.

It consisted of blues and musette (traditional French popular music where the accordion is the principal instrument).
The band was called The Blue Rhythm Kings and that was also the title of the cassette.
Thus, the Wolverines are identified as Bix and His Gang and the personnel of the Wolverines is given erroneously as that of the early edition of Bix and His Gang.

Big Bill Bissonnette, a fine trombonist, is actually most significent for his work as a record label owner and as an instigator of stimulating projects.
Given the circumstances, with no rehearsal time, it was a major acheivement to get no less than 17 tracks in the can and there is a remarkable feeling of integration between the members of the trio.
My favorite tracks are "Wolverine Blues,"" So Sweet," a ragged but exciting Terry the Tiger" and "Red Light Blues." Fine Simmons blues piano on the latter and a non-slap down home chorus to back Norman's Creole clarinet.

Morton, Jelly Roll. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Although Morton is regarded by many as the greatest New Orleans pianist and the first great jazz composer, his egocentricity, moodiness, and quarrelsome disposition led many musicians and critics to disparage him.
His compositions and arrangements, many of which reflect his Creole background, include Dead Man Blues, Jelly Roll Blues, King Porter Stomp, Black Bottom Stomp, Mama Nita, Mamie’s Blues (or 219 Blues), Moi pas l’aimez ça, The Pearls, Sidewalk Blues, and Wolverine Blues.
The publication of his collected scores in 1982 helped to spark a Morton revival in the United States.

Business began to pick up in the late 1930s; he recorded for Decca and Columbia in 1938, for the fledgling Blue Note label in 1938 and 1939, and for RCA Victor from 1939 through 1941.
After being diagnosed with heart and kidney problems, Big Sid relocated to Chicago to spare himself the rigors of the road, and soon took up steady work at Jazz Ltd. Unfortunately, he suffered a heart attack and died in Chicago on March 25, 1951, before Jazz Ltd. organized another recording session.
Later in 1951 the Reinhardts brought their house band into the studio to cut 5 extended selections (ranging from a "High Society" that clocked in compactly at 4:17 to a "Tin Roof Blues" that stretched all the way out to 8:06).

With wolverine blues entombed moved away from the straight forward death metal towards what they called "death and roll".
The best way to describe entombed's sound is death metal meets punk via moterhead.
The best tracks on this album, for example, rotten blues, contempt, the title track and the simply magnificent out of hand are up there with anything that the Scandinavian extreme metal scene has thrown since.

The album Wolverine Blues (Earache, 1993) completely trascends the death-metal canon, although Eyemaster is a last nostalgic look back.
To Ride Shoot Straight And Speak The Truth (Silvertone, 1997) is an eclectic collection that runs the gamut from the heavy sludge of the title-track to the acrobatic rock and roll of Wreckage.
L'album Wolverine Blues (Earache, 1993) fu forse il loro migliore, proprio perche' abbandono` gli stereotipi del death-metal e fece capire che il sound si stava facendo meno veloce e meno intenso, piu` grunge che metal.

These 59 selections, performing with jazz illuminaries such as Fletcher Henderson, Jimmy Dorsey, the Mills Brothers, Gordon Jenkins, Sy Oliver, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, not to mention his own Louis Armstrong Orchestra and Allstars have been painstakenly restored and presented in chronologial sequence.
To say this is absolute essential listening is like saying the New York Yankees are a pretty good ball club.
It less about creative breakthroughs of the sort found on the earlier recordings, but more about Louis' complete confidence in his abilities and those of the group as entertainers.

Granted, only four of the songs are really any good, and the title track exists on Wolverine Blues, but the truth is, the other three songs are worth it.
Fitting in nicely with anything on Wolverine Blues, and probably better than a good few of them, "Serpent Speech," "Bonehouse" and "Put Off the Scent" carry this EP from beginning to end.
I sometimes wonder why they weren't added to the full-length because of their quality.
