Wolves of the Calla - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wolves of the Calla is the fifth book in Stephen King's The Dark Tower series.
The weapons used by the Wolves, "Lightsticks", appear to be working versions of the Lightsabers of Star Wars.
The Wolves themselves appear to be based on Doctor Doom's Doombots.

Devastating in a town like Calla Bryn Sturgis where nearly all children born are twins and a singleton is rare.
There would be three remaining volumes, Wolves of the Calla being the first, and the final two would be released in the beginning and end of 2004.

welcome to paul edmund norman's the gateway
I'm deep into Stephen King's new one, WOLVES OF THE CALLA, the fifth title in the DARK TOWER series, and it's difficult to come to terms with the fact that this is probably the finest novel King has ever written.
WOLVES OF THE CALLA is by way of an interlude in that quest, but inexorably bound to it.
The inhabitants of Calla Bryn Sturgis breed identical twins.

Bookreporter.com - WOLVES OF THE CALLA by Stephen King
WOLVES OF THE CALLA continues the saga of Roland the Gunslinger and his quest for the Tower, but the withal of this volume is a divergence.
The most interesting manifestation in WOLVES OF THE CALLA, however, is that of Reverend Donald Callahan, last seen catching a Greyhound bus for New York City in SALEM'S LOT, now a resident of Calla Bryn Sturgis.
Taken on their own, however, The Dark Tower volumes and WOLVES OF CALLA are spellbinding in their own right for the way that King has constructed this other world that may or may not be our own down to the last nuance.

Wolves is as robust and wildly interesting an addition to the series as the previous four, and despite some off-the-wall criticisms, it most certainly does contribute to the overall Dark Tower story arc.
Thus the tale of Wolves of the Calla unfolds.
Wolves of the Calla is only one episode in his long search for the answer to that question, but it sure is a fun ride.

Boston.com / A&E / Books / 'Calla' worth the read, but caters to 'Tower' fans
In any case, "Wolves of the Calla" is just too weighty to be ignored, and not just because of its 700-plus pages and $35 price tag.
While "Calla" bears little resemblance to his modern horror novels, such as "From a Buick 8" or the story collection "Everything's Eventual," careful readers will find many connections to King's fantasy-oriented works, such as "Black House," "The Talisman," "The Stand," "Hearts in Atlantis," and others.
But as a stand-alone novel, `Wolves of the Calla" is not particularly user-friendly.

Wolves of the Calla continues the adventures of Roland, the Last Gunslinger and survivor of a civilized world that has "moved on." Roland's quest is ka, an inevitable destiny -- to reach and perhaps save the Dark Tower, which stands at the center of everywhere and everywhen.
This pursuit brings Roland, with the three others who've joined his quest to Calla Bryn Sturgis, a town in the shadow of Thunderclap, beyond which lies the Dark Tower.
Roland and his posse learn that every 20-odd years the "Wolves" kidnap one child from each set of the Calla's twins, bring them to the Tower and, weeks later, send them back mentally and physically impaired.

Wolves of the Calla, the fifth installment in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, gunslinger Roland Deschain returns with the other member of his ka-tet, Eddie Dean, Susanna Holmes, and Jake Chambers.
In the town of Calla Bryn Sturgis, most of the children are born as twins, and once every 20 years, a band of horsemen in wolves' masks ride into town and make off with one child from each set of twins.
Wolves of the Calla has received mostly positive reviews, with the Philadelphia Inquirer saying, "Say what you will about Stephen King, the man can spin a yarn, and a great one at that."

It's gunslingers vs. demons in King's latest 'Dark Tower'
The new volume, "Wolves of the Calla," presents a situation familiar to anyone who has ever sat through "The Magnificent Seven" or any Western by John Ford or Sergio Leone.
The small town of Calla Bryn Sturgis learns that a band of outlaws, in this case wolf-masked demons wielding laser-like weapons, are on their way to steal half their children and take them away to the badlands known as Thunderclap.
Nevertheless, King is at a dangerous crossroads with "Wolves of the Calla." Endgames have never been his strong suit, and many of his novels have foundered on their final chapters.

Andy's smile probably could not become troubled — he was a robot, after all, the last one in Calla Bryn Sturgis or for miles and wheels around — but to Tian it seemed to grow troubled, just the same.
You were apt to see him anywhere in the Calla (he would not venture beyond its borders) striding on his impossibly thin silver legs, looking everywhere, occasionally clicking to himself as he stored (or perhaps purged — who knew?) information.
He sang songs, passed on gossip and rumor from one end of town to the other — a tireless walker was Andy the Messenger Robot — and seemed to enjoy the giving of horoscopes above all things, although there was general agreement in the village that they meant little.
