 BU Womens' Studies Program
The core of the Women's Studies Program, a two-semester interdisciplinary course titled Women, Society, and Culture (WS 113 and WS 114), is based on feminist scholarship from many academic disciplines.
These courses not only introduce students to the new questions, theories, and methods that make up the evolving field of Women's Studies, but concentrate on developing critical skills that are used to examine the assumptions and methodologies of selected disciplines, focusing on the ways in which these disciplines deal with and affect women.
Develops students' media literacy through hands-on analysis of media representations of women, femininity, and race; explores the relationship of these representations to women's lived experience; examines the place of "female" values in contemporary culture; and explores what is at stake in negotiating race and gender in contemporary culture.

Wandering around Oxbridge, Woolf is asked to keep off the grass, barred from the library, and made aware that she should not enter the chapel--all because she is a woman, not a "fellow." Marguerite had been in the library and realized too late that she had waited until after dark to leave.
She witnessed several women making calls at the public phone, for what was obviously routine "protection." My student has realized something about Woolf's text that, perhaps, no man could, and she is energized by this new understanding.

Diane Balser has been teaching Women's Studies courses at Boston University for the past seven years and is also the director of undergraduate studies for Women Studies minors.
It provided women with access to legislators, congressional delegations, and gubernatorial administrations, and also offered consultation to public policy makers on issues concerning women and children.

Inaugurated as a department in 2001, Women's and Gender Studies has grown from offering a few courses at the University in 1973 to becoming one of the strongest interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate programs in the United States.
Currently Women's and Gender Studies enrolls 130 undergraduates in major and minor degree programs, 27 students in the Ph.D. program and 21 students in the M.A. program.
Department faculty include 26 core, 105 graduate, and 69 affiliate members whose expertise in women's and gender studies is enriched by specializations in the arts, anthropology, philosophy, sociology, political science, and comparative literatures in English, French, and Spanish.
