United States Olympic Committee - Pentathlon World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Begins
The top women in the Pentathlon World Ranking that are not otherwise qualified for the Athens Olympic Games will receive invitations to compete in the Modern Pentathlon at the 2004 Olympic Games.
There were few surprises in the semi-finals as 18 of the top 20 women from the New Balance Pentathlon World Ranking List were amongst the 32 women that qualified for the finals to be held on Saturday.
In the men's event, 15 of the top 20 men -- as ranked by the New Balance Pentathlon World Ranking -- will be competing, including Sweden's Erik Johansson winner of last weeks World Cup in Mexico and Edvinas Krungolcas (LTU), who is currently ranked first in the world.

Press Box - Modern Pentathlon Athens Qualifiers - 6/15/2004
Only thirty two (32) men and thirty two (32) women worldwide are selected to compete at the Olympic games, making Modern Pentathlon one of the most difficult of all 28 Olympic sports for which to qualify.
Incidentally, it would appear that the United States will be one of a handful (perhaps two or three) countries in the world to qualify the maximum quota of four (4) athletes for Athens, in the sport of Modern Pentathlon.
For the second consecutive time, the United States has achieved the maximum qualification quota of two (2) men and two (2) women for an Olympiad, having already achieved the feat for the 2000 Sydney games; when women competed for the first time in Olympic history, earning a Silver medal.
