Two Women - Martina Cole - Review - Put this down? Criminal...
Martina's books are all set in the criminal underworld and upon reading any of them it is clear that the author writes 'what she knows'.
Her books are gritty and graphic and though they contain a lot of violence, Martina herself hates violence and has become a patron of a womans aid group in order to help raise awareness of the effects of violence, which she also believes her books to do.
The book ends with yet another cunning twist in the plot, I saw it coming but couldn't convincingly tell myself that was how the book would end as Martina is a master at surprising her reader with the unexpected.

Parenting by the Book - iVillage
The book includes a great section on ineffective parent types — from avoidant to disorganized to nagging to martyr — and how to painlessly reform yourself.
Using wicked humor and the formal tone of a 1950s etiquette book, this slim volume seeks to correct parents of the notion that their lives should now revolve around the littlest member of the family.
But this book isn't all wit — along with the humor and retro tone, the author slips in smart, modern parenting advice on how to raise kids.

  Women's Books Online - A Cooperative Book Review - Q1 1996
The book has a spiritual approach, and the author is very Christian; and although she says that God is whatever you'd like it/her/him to be, the flavor is still quite Christian, which is hardly noticeable, if and only if you are Christian.
The book centers on her observations, and her creation of a new religion, a new way of living, that she begins to teach people as she encounters them on her odyssey away from Los Angeles toward a place of Eden, which might not even be on Planet Earth.
The book is a fantasy, not in the situations, which are only too real, but in the longed-for solidarity of the women who don't turn away, even for an instant, when any of their sisters are in trouble.

Books, your love for which was a boon bequeathed by your father, now void of comfort and scarcely serving for brief distraction, make their appeal to unheeding ears.

Your son was never removed from your sight; with an ability that was outstanding and would have made him the rival of his grandfather had he not been hampered by modesty, which in the case of many men checks their advancement by silence, he shaped all his studies beneath your eyes.

Women were hungry to learn about what they were calling herstory, and they devoured the book eagerly, usually without teasing apart fact from fiction.
Walker's latest book, Restoring the Goddess: Equal rites for modern women, is presented as scholarship on thealogy and, as such, was sent to Sociology of Religion for review.
It is, however, an interesting book, and the comments from some of the women fascinating, from their descriptions of how they use magic to how they experience the Goddess manifest in their daily lives.
