 Film History of the 1960s
The box-office champ film of 1968 [the film was released in late 1967] was accompanied by an equally-popular Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack, and the memorable quote: "Plastics".
The film skewered the success-oriented decade of the 1950s and was regarded as somewhat risque at the time, but considered tame by the end of the 1960s.
Soon afterwards in 1969, the M rating was changed to GP (General Patronage) and then to PG (meaning 'Parental Guidance Suggested') in 1970, and the age restriction was raised to 17 from 16.

Alan Bates Film Archive: "Women in Love"
At the head of "Women in Love's" near-perfect cast are, of course, the quartet of lovers, complex characters all, therefore requiring actors of resource, talent and imagination.
For the story it has to tell, "Women in Love" seems unnecessarily long at 130 minutes, but the Kramer-Russell collaboration is so artful as to hold a viewer's attention with the sensual flavor of Lawrence and a well-sifted simplification of his tangled thoughts on human relationships.
"Women in Love" has proved to be the sort of landmark film that forces its stars to comment forever after.

Alan Bates - Biography - Moviefone
The son of an insurance broker and a housewife, Bates was born the eldest of three brothers in the Midlands suburb of Allestree, Derbyshire, on February 17, 1934.
Starring roles in Bryan Forbes' Whistle Down the Wind and John Schlesinger's A Kind of Loving followed two years later; both films received acclaim, much of which was directed toward Bates' performances as a murderer on the run in the former and a young working-class dreamer in the latter.
This tendency was unforgettably demonstrated with his nude turns in Le Roi de Coeur and Women in Love, the latter of which required him to engage in an earthy wrestling session with Oliver Reed.

 Women in Love (1969)
Women in Love is Ken Russell's adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's classic novel, though more famous for it’s nude wrestling scene between Reed and Bates than Russell’s direction.
Set in 1920s England, Gerald (Oliver Reed) and Rupert (Alan Bates) star as friends who fall in love with a pair of sisters, iron-willed artist Gudrun (Glenda Jackson), and her schoolteacher sister Ursula (Jennie Linden).
The relationships take markedly different directions as the film explores the nature of commitment and love, Rupert and Ursula learn to give themselves to each other; the more withdrawn Gerald cannot, finally, connect with the demanding and challenging Gudrun.

Before director Ken Russell's name became synonymous with cinematic extravagance and overkill, he actually directed what is one of the most passionate and involving adaptations of DH Lawrence in recent memory.
Shot with great sensuality, Women in Love was surprisingly frank for its period (1970) and includes one of the most charged scenes in movie history: Bates and Reed as manly men, wrestling nude by firelight.
