Although his initial arcade outing is a fast paced side scrolling platformer, the series branched out into two different directions: Hudson's Adventure Island series, which maintained the same gameplay as the arcade original; and Monster Land, a series of excellent adventure games that made their appearances on the Master System, Genesis, and Turbografx-16.
Wonder Boy 3 was also released for the Game Gear in Europe and Japan, and other than some concessions to make everything fit onto the small screen (and a cooler title screen), it's pretty much the exact same game.
Wonder Boy in Monster Land was filled with weird looking shopkeepers, but the wackiest one of all is this guy from Wonder Boy 3.

However, my first and foremost philosophy with arcade gaming is that it should be theoretically possible for the player to finish the game on credit - extremely difficult - but possible.
Because Wonderboy in Monster Lair is HARD - possibly the hardest arcade game I've played to date - and the end of level bosses just get more and more ridiculously impossible to kill as you venture onwards.
It was everything an arcade game should be - exciting in short bursts, a challenge, and technically excellent.

The game is full of glitches (eg: sometimes some sprites palette gets screwed up after entering a door), I saw the same glitches in arcades in Japan as well, so it is either the bootleg version they had or all versions of this game include bugs.

October 15, 2004 - With four years in the life of the PS2 behind us we were expecting to see a lot more quality games and maybe some more online options, but to see a complete overhaul of the system was a complete surprise.
But that's what really happened at the Tokyo game Show and unfortunately the tiny new versions were all under plexiglass and all we could do is stare at them and wonder if they really worked.
Well, we don't wonder any more because we got one in the office and after every editor had to come and hold the thing we checked out to see what was new.
