Wonder Boy was a series of video games made by SEGA and Westone.
Most of the games that were under the Wonder Boy name in North America and Europe were part of the Monster World series in Japan.
Adventure Island (Called Takahashi Meijin no Bouken Jima in Japan)--Hudson Soft ported the original Wonder Boy to the NES with new music, new (less colorful) bosses, and a new hero: Master Higgins/Takahashi Meijin, who was based on an actual video game fan.

Monster World IV Monster World IV Monster World IV is the only game in the series without the Wonder Boy title, which makes sense- the protagonist this time is a young green haired Arabian girl named Arsha.
Monster World IV is level based, and while you can explore a central hub town for goodies (and need to solve some minor puzzles, which can be difficult if you don't know Japanese or aren't playing the translated ROM), you never gain any new skills to backtrack to old levels.
Double thanks to Tenacious D for their excellent song entitled "Wonder Boy", despite it having nothing to do with the games (though killing yaks with mind bullets would be a stunning concept for a video.) No thanks to the Google image search engine, as "Wonder Boy" brings up lots of hits for gay porn.

The original Wonder Boy was pretty good but the way your health depleted was kind of frustrating.
I'd say Wonder Boy - the Dragon's trap was the greatest one, the music was amazing and so catchy, and the ability to transform into different creatures was great too.

This is the correct dump from all export cartridges I could find: European version, USA version, and also the cartridge with the "Super Wonder Boy Super Monster Land" label.
I think it is rather the work of a Wonder Boy in Monster Land enthusiast who wanted to be able to PAUSE without jumping on his SMS and play in the harder difficulty mode.
That Wonder Boy was part of the lot and as I remember, MikeG redumped all cartridges then.

In fact, Wonder Boy In Monster World on the Mega Drive was possibly the most confusing of all, seeing as the Japanese version was entitled Wonder Boy V: Monster World III when it was released in October 1991.

WBIMW was also fun to play, despite the fact that Wonder Boy himself moved at a frustratingly slow pace and had all the mobility of an OAP in lead boots - which, incidentally, were what you needed to access the underwater levels (the boots, not the OAP).
