Situated in the northern part of the city, and straddling the Magaliesberg Mountains, is the Wonderboom Nature Reserve, a 200 hectare reserve famous for its magnificent specimen of the Wonderboom.
The large Wonderboom fig tree at the Wonderboom Nature Reserve is more than 1 000 years old, and legend has it that it grew this big because the chief of an indigenous tribe lies buried beneath its roots.
At the top of the Wonderboom Hill are the ruins of the Wonderboom Fort, one of four forts built by the former Zuid-Afrikaanse Republiek at the end of the 19th century to defend the city against the British.

The Wonderboom Nature Reserve is a 1 km² reserve centered on a wild willowleaf fig tree Ficus salicifolia that is more than a thousand years old, found to the north of the Magaliesberg in the city of Tshwane north of central Pretoria, South Africa.
"Wonderboom" is the Afrikaans name that translates as Wonder Tree.
Other features of the Wonderboom Nature preserve include a stone age site that has given up the largest single accumulation of Neolithic tools ever found in South Africa and an Iron Age site, as well as a breeding pair of Black Eagles.

Tshwane Nature Conservation's Dawid Boshoff said it appeared the animal was from the unfenced Magaliesberg green belt area, opposite the nature reserve.
While the nature reserve was properly fenced, the green belt section protected under conservation laws, between Voortrekkers Road and the N1, was not.
The last animal to be run over in the area was a leopard that was killed on the N1 in the early 90s.
