The WonderSwan was made to compete with the Neo-Geo Pocket Color and the market leader Nintendo's Game Boy Color (even though ironically the developer for the WonderSwan, Gunpei Yokoi, developed the original Nintendo Game Boy).
The WonderSwan was later replaced by the WonderSwan Color.
Although some WonderSwan Color games are compatible with the original WonderSwan, many are designed exclusively for the WonderSwan Color and show a message such as "This cartridge is for WonderSwan Color only" when run on the original WonderSwan.

Although the WonderSwan Color was slightly larger and heavier (7 mm and 2 g) compared to the original WonderSwan, the color version featured 512K of RAM and a larger color LCD screen.
After the release of the WonderSwan Color, Bandai took approximately 8% of the market share in Japan partly due to its low price of 6800 yen (approximately $65 U.S. Dollars).
Another reason for the WonderSwan's success in Japan was the fact that Bandai managed to get a deal with Squaresoft to port over the original Famicom Final Fantasy games with improved graphics and controls.

The Wonderswan Color is release, using the same footprint and physical dimensions of the original Wonderswan, but this time with a color screen.
Part of their success is that it is less expensive that the Game Boy Color and it has a large projected software support base with lots of companies said to be developing titles for the Wonderswan, and titles will sell for less than the price of Game Boy cartridges.
The Color has what I consider to be a very serious flaw, and that is that the Wonderswan Color requires a lot of direct light to be viewable and playable.

Following the recent announcement of Square's upcoming Wonderswan Color title, Blue Wing Blitz, further details regarding the game have become available.
Along with Blue Wing Blitz and their Final Fantasy remakes, Square is also working on a Wonderswan Color installment of their Front Mission series.

When Bandai revealed its Wonderswan Color handheld in early 2000, everyone was fairly surprised to see Square supporting the new hardware with a port of Final Fantasy, as well as Final Fantasy II and III.
Being able to just turn on the Wonderswan for a couple hours and fight in battles, then taking a break with the newly added quicksave option, is a lot of fun that even proves relaxing on some occasions.
The only thing that hinders the visual bliss that is Final Fantasy is the Wonderswan Color's screen, which doesn't seem to reflect anything but artificial light very well.
