		The distinction between spindle turning and faceplate turning is due to the fibrous nature of the material.
		Spindle turning cuts are made from high points toward the axis on the outside of the piece, and from the axis toward the outside when hollowing.
		May be turned to finished thickness, in which case the differential shrinkage of the wood will result in a finished piece that is not perfectly round.

		It is this 1”-2” area of heart wood surrounding the pith that is generally the culprit that causes bowls to crack and split.
		End grain turnings, wood parallel to the bed of the lathe, are generally very stable and do not move much at all, especially if the pith/heartwood is removed.
		This is one of the most important cuts in preparing green wood for turning, because the middle of the log is the location of the the pith/heart wood.

		I often turn small pieces of wood in my lathe by just using the normal tool post and tool steel sharpened to have plenty of rake.
