German cider is mainly produced and consumed in Hessen, particularly in the Frankfurt, Wetterau and Odenwald areas, in Moselfranken, Merzig (Saarland) and the Trier area, as well as the lower Saar area and the region bordering on Luxembourg.
Cider made in the West Country is often referred to as "scrumpy", from the local dialect verb "to scrump": to steal apples.

This cider was a pleasant surprise to me. The first time I tried Woodchuck in a bottle, it was their more normal amber varietal, and I likened it to “fermented prune juice,” so I was not exactly excited about the prospect of a Granny Smith version.
It is 5% alcohol, but a rather light cider; it would be very easy to keep these coming if you didn’t get sick from the feeling of, well, eating three or four Granny Smith apples in a row.
I’ll be honest; this isn’t going to blow you away, but it’s an okay cider and something that I could certainly imagine myself having a craving for, especially in the summer, which is outside of the traditional cider season.

I think I decided long ago that Woodchuck is in the beer category, therefore, you must not drink it until you are finished with any hard liquor you are planning on drinking (after all, beer then liquor, never been sicker).
Woodchuck is cider with that kick that alcohol adds to anything — you can taste the fact that it is not normal cider, but Woodchuck is certainly not apple cider with a shot of vodka.
I can recommend Woodchuck to anyone who is looking for a cold drink, yet does not want to get drunk, and anyone who does not want to drink either a beer or hard lemonade.

As a cider drinker, apple wine does not have much appeal to me (although their selections are generally quite good).
I have Patrick and Erin to thank for this one, as I had been mystified by the rumors of the elusive Dark & Dry Woodchuck for some time before randomly discovering a variety 12-pack of Woodchuck while visiting DC for their wedding.
Like Woodchuck, though, my guess is that this one would taste even better on tap.
