woodcreeper. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Woodcreepers resemble the woodpeckers in form, having short legs with powerful, sharply clawed feet, stiff-shafted tail feathers, and moderately long, woodpeckerlike bills.
Woodcreeper bills vary, however, from the long scimitar-shaped beak of the scythebill (Campylorhaphus falcularius), half as long as the bird itself, to the short beak of the wedgebill (genus Glyphorhynchus), with its slightly upcurved lower mandible.
Woodcreepers are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Aves, order Passeriformes, family Dendrocolaptidae.

The Olivaceous Woodcreeper occurs in lowland rainforest in Amazonia and along the Atlantic coast of Brazil, in deciduous woodland on the Yucatán Peninsula and in the caatinga of north-eastern Brazil, and in montane forest in Central America, the Andes, the coastal ranges of Venezuela and the various ranges of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.
Woodcreepers are generally encountered singly or in pairs, but many species join the mixed-species flocks that are ubiquitous in the lowland forests frequented by those dendrocolaptids.
The Scimitar-billed Woodcreeper is likewise atypical for a woodcreeper, as the loud, descending jumbles of notes that represent its song are often given in a duet.

Woodcreepers are solitary forest birds that nest in holes or crevices.
More likely to be recognised by it’s long decending song, the Woodcreeper spends it’s day flying from one tree to the base of another, slowly climbing up the second in search of insects, invertabrates and may even follow army ants feeding on both the ants and any creatures they disturb.
The Woodcreeper is a forest bird, and rarely ventures beyond the forest edge.

 Joaquin Aldabe Public Abstract
Woodcreepers are Neotropical birds renowned for their tree climbing habits.
It is on the trunks and branches of trees where almost all species forage, reproduce, and sleep, using their strong tail feathers as a body support in the same way as woodpeckers (Picidae).
It turned out that the proportion of the metatarsal length (distal leg bone) in relation to whole leg length is larger in the Scimitar billed Woodcreeper than in the rest of the species studied, an adaptation to increase movement capability on the ground.

Classification of birds of South America Part 06
Within the New World "Tyrannides," two major divisions are traditionally recognized and supported by genetic data (e.g., Chesser 2004): (1) the the woodcreepers, ovenbirds, antbirds, gnateaters, and tapaculos, and (2) the tyrant-flycatchers, manakins, and cotingas.
This classification treats the woodcreepers (formerly Dendrocolpatidae) and the ovenbirds (Furnariidae) as members of a single family.
Drymornis bridgesii differs from all other woodcreepers in syringeal structure (Ames 1971), mallophagans (Kudon 1982), and foraging behavior (semiterrestrial), and Raikow (1994) suggested that it and Nasica might be the outgroup taxa to all other Dendrocolaptidae.

The streaking on the mantle is more extensive than would be expected on White-throated Woodcreeper and the malar is really too indistinct.

Yalden (1985) noted that the manal claws of Archaeopteryx most closely approximated those of highly arboreal birds such as the woodcreeper Dendrocopus minor, and found no close resemblance to those of highly predaceous forms.
Feduccia (1993a) demonstrated convincingly that the pes claws of Archaeopteryx are also similar in their geometry to those of arboreal, perching forms, with a mean curvature of 120 degrees, well outside the range of terrestrial cursors such as Centropus, where the same curvature measures around 85.7 degrees.
