Corn was introduced to the southeastern United States during the Middle Woodland subperiod, although it appears sparingly in the archaeological record for Georgia and was evidently not an important dietary staple.
The Kolomoki site in southwestern Georgia was the largest Woodland settlement in the state and contained at least eight mounds, seven of which have been preserved.
Recent excavations have revealed, however, that the growing of corn may also have become prevalent in Georgia during the Late Woodland, particularly in the northern part of the state and near the end of the period.

 The Woodland Period, Southeast Archaeological Center
The term "Woodland" was introduced in the 1930s as a generic heading for prehistoric sites falling between the Archaic hunting and gathering and the temple-mound-building Mississippian cultures in the eastern United States.
The Middle Woodland of the North Carolina coastal plain is represented by two cultures, the Mount Pleasant culture in the northern part of the state and the Cape Fear culture in the southern part.
The Late Woodland period for this area is differentiated from the early Middle Woodland on the basis of the tempering and surface treatment of pottery styles.

Woodland Indians (1000 BC - 1000 AD in the Southeastern United States) improved on the rudimentary cultivation techniques of their Archaic Period predecessors.
In 1969 the remains of a Cartersville era (Middle Woodland Period) village was discovered along the banks of the Chattahoochee River.
It is believed that Indians of the Woodland Period are responsible for the stone wall at Fort Mountain and similar works on Alec Mountain, Sand Mountain, Mount Alto and Ladd Mountain.

Woodland Indians are noted for the cultivation of crops in the fertile valleys of North Georgia, creating intricately designed, tempered pottery with the ubiquitous red Georgia clay, building burial mounds and other ceremonial structures and effigies, and developing a system of trade relying on inland waterways and coastal passages.
Early Woodland Indians (before 1000 BC) probably continued to be nomadic to some extent, but did begin to develop ritualistic burials and extended trade networks.Modern science has allowed us to track pottery found found in Mississippi to the hills of North Georgia.
In 1000 BC there appears to have been a revolution of sorts as the Woodland Indians began to permanently inhabit settlements.
