The area now known as Woodland Township was first settled in 1837 by Charles Galloway and Jonathan and Samuel Haight.
On April 5 of that year, the township board voted to build a "town house." The building committee consisting of George Cramer, George Davenport, Alson P. Holly, John Holbrook and Ira Stowell drafted a plan and construction began.
The township board accepted the completed town hall and discharged the building committee three years later.

In 1993, the State of Michigan granted permits to Waste Management Inc. (WMI) to fill 50 acres of wetlands in order to build the “Woodland Meadows” landfill at the corner of Van Born Road and I-275 in western Wayne County.
Rally organizer Dan Farough, the Michigan Sierra Club’s legislative director, opened the event by describing the scope of the trash import problem – in tons of garbage and its effect on people’s daily lives.
Michigan is currently the only state in the Great Lakes region that does not levy a trash surcharge or fee.
