The Woodpigeon (Columba palumbus) is a member of the family Columbidae, Doves and Pigeons.
In the colder northern and eastern parts of its European and western Asiatic range the Woodpigeon is a migrant, but in southern and western Europe it is a well distributed and often abundant resident.
The three western European Columba pigeons, though superficially alike, have very distinctive characters; the Woodpigeon may at once be told its larger size and the white on its neck and wing.

PAGE 1 OF The largest member of the pigeon family in the UK, the woodpigeon is traditionally a bird of the countryside, but it is increasingly seen in parks and gardens and even town and city centres, feeding alongside the more familiar feral pigeon.
Apart from sheer size, several other features serve to distinguish the woodpigeon from its relatives; a noticeable white patch on each side of the neck, and white patches on the wings, which show as clear white crescents when the bird is in flight but are not as prominent when the wings are folded.
Woodpigeons often start nesting very early in the year, perhaps prompted by an early warm spell, and their flimsy stick nests are often so sparse that the eggs can be seen in the nest from underneath.
