 About the Victoria County History
The Allan estate representative argued that the council was overestimating future population growth, and that as the Durham coalfield declined, Darlington would follow: 'I suggest that the prosperity of Darlington is on the wane.' The town clerk replied that if no development took place, the roads would not be built.
By 1950 a plan had been agreed in principle between the Ministry of Transport and the Durham county council to build a 'motor road' from Barton to Coatham Mundeville which would rejoin the existing A1 at Mainsforth, exactly the route of the recently closed Merrybent branch railway line.
Durham county council favoured a cross town route, while the borough council, backed by the Department of Transport, preferred a southern course from Great Burdon, turning west to Blands Corner, at the southern end of Grange Road.
