The Lathams were handsome blades of the dashing type which fits the romantic picture of the South that was, graceful land of longuor and luxury, of jasmine bowered, white columned verandas looking out on spacious lawns and vistas of ancient live oaks.
He was one of fifteen heirs of Woodville Latham, the elder, to share in the inheritance of ruined estates in the sad aftermath of the War of the Rebellion.
Latham was therefore trying to attain the visual effect by increasing the volume of light which passed through the picture to the screen.

Their model worked but they became discouraged when 'experts' assured them that an engine of this type, with it's noise and inflammable potentialities could never be commercial because it wouldn't be permitted on the streets.
Latham had no mechanical knowledge or experience but had conceived the idea of devising a projector for the Kinetoscope.
It was Lauste who devised the idea of a loop to feed the film smoothly into the intermittent movement but it was Latham that got the credit and it became known as the 'Latham Loop'.

 Who's Who of Victorian Cinema
In Decembet, the Lathams formed the Lambda Company - the Greek 'L' for Latham - and a start was made in their quest for a motion picture projector.
Shortly after the first camera test in February, a film was made on the roof of the workshop at 35 Frankfort Street, New York City; Woodville Latham smoked a pipe and the others in the team fooled around.
A top loop, designed earlier to reduce the stress on the long lengths of film used in their camera and known as the 'Latham Loop', was added to the projector, to reduce tension on the intermittently-moving film, (at about the same time as a similar arrangement was being developed by Thomas Armat).

 Articles > The "Latham Loop"
So it was with the "Latham Loop", the small, slack-forming loop that the film's path takes just before it passes in back of a camera's, or in front of a projector's shutter.
While Professor Latham pursued his studies of the sciences (his expertise being in the fields of chemistry and physics) his sons worked for pharmaceutical companies in the city and pursued their passion for wine, women and song.
The "Latham Loop" had been officially registered, and it is a discovery that continues to be used in every motion picture film camera and projector to this day.

Unpopular projector developed by the Lathams, included a loop system which was to become a significant addition to motion pictures throughout history to the present day it became known as the Latham Loop.
Developed a projector based on the Kinetoscope's continuous movement of film with a synchronised shutter (rather than the intermittent movement seen elsewhere) but they increased the film width to two inches and the film running between two spools rather than in one continous band.
The loop was implemented to avoid undue strain on the film as the intermittent movement pulled it through the heavy spools.
