Sure, Woodward Avenue of today is much different than it was 30 years ago, and the Dream Cruise is as much traffic jam as it is joyride, but that only stems from the excitement generated by a chance to relive a piece of Americana.
Many of the 700,000 or so lining Woodward Avenue and walking the streets in awe of the rare machines surrounding them can only dream of having one of those classics, but all were able to imagine themselves behind the wheel.
Many of those classics that line Woodward Avenue for one or two days a year now are the same cars that cruised that strip in its heyday.

Woodward Avenue, Detroit's grand old 'Main Street'
Judge Augustus B. Woodward was at times very sarcastic and something of a 'kidder.' When some protested the naming of Woodward Avenue he made the curious retort that Woodward Avenue was not named for him, but because it led woodward, toward the forested district north of town.
The entire 27-mile length of Woodward was paved in 1916 and in 1919 the three-color traffic light appeared on the thoroughfare.
Legal disputes over the widening of Woodward, including an 1874 condemnation proceeding in which the Detroit News offered a certificate of publication (of the original condemnation proceedings) as evidence, were finally resolved in 1932 and all that remained was securing agreement a majority of property owners along the way.

The Woodward Mystique - Detroit - Event Coverage - Hot Rod Magazine
In the beginning, Woodward wasn’t “Woodward”; it was simply a wide, four-lane thoroughfare that tempted people to drive when there was no good reason for it, except for that big one.
Woodward was the epitome of car-oriented suburbia and duly perpetuated by the car companies.
Woodward Avenue begins a block north of Grand Circus Park in the gut of Detroit and arcs gently to the northwest, cleaving the backyards of what once was Ford, Chevrolet, Chrysler, and Pontiac.
