 MAGAZINE | FEATURES | Woody Allen's Hollywood Ending | VOLUME 27-1: May 2002
Woody Allen may have cemented his fame in this movie with the words — "Only New Yorkers talk so much about their problems, and only in Woody Allen films!" But it's his meticulous attention to the entire frame that ranks him with the screen's great romantics.
Allen is considered the consummate "actor's director" with actors from theater, film and television clamoring for an opportunity to work with him.
Allen expanded upon his reluctance to share his creative process in the area of music, going on to note, "You sit there with a composer and he plays his stuff, and he may have missed what you were going after.

Woody Allen, coming off of hitting his stride again with Melinda and Melinda, goes back to his darker, dramatic side, and makes a story that may seem a little familiar, though not to his discredit.
Woody borrows (some may say steal) elements from Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, one of the great novels of the 19th century (some may say ever written, I have read his work though not this yet), and transfuses it with subject matter that he's more than well acquainted with- the relationship drama.
Allen handles this dilemma with a powerful precision, by building up the relationships Chris has with each girl, and how there is not unbelievability in the set-ups.

Allen has won eight BAFTA (British Academy of Film) awards and his films have consistently won prizes and acclaim from the New York and Chicago Film Critics Circles, the Writers Guild of America, the Cesar Awards in France and the Bodils in Denmark.
Allen appears fascinated by the fact that whether or not we choose to acknowledge it, death's constant presence is manifested in the idea of God and the possibility of moral order in the universe, the afterlife, fate.
However Allen's decision to have this particular character commit suicide perhaps indicates that he (Allen) no longer has faith in reason; that, as another character in the film comments, systems of belief are futile in the face of lived experience.

 Woody Allen
While some people conveniently draw dividing lines through the films of Woody Allen, separating the comedies from the dramas, the youthful humor from the mature angst, a fresh viewing of 1971's Bananas reveals that the director's multi-faceted talents were there from the start, just hidden a little deeper beneath the comic surface.
But beneath the physical zaniness of Allen's antics -- reminiscent of the great comics of the silent era -- is an artist wrestling with larger issues of mortality, morality and, of course, sexual frustration.
The story emerged from a project Allen and co-writer Mickey Rose had developed in 1966 entitled Don Quixote U.S.A. The film was conceived as a vehicle for Robert Morse (The Loved One (1965)), and involved an American Peace Corps member who finds himself stranded in a Caribbean dictatorship.

Woody Allen's film 'Deconstructing Harry' is his most ambitious work since 'Hannah and Her Sisters.' Its satirical wit and structural complexity allow Allen to present to viewers a fascinating character study of a destructive writer who, unable to deal with the realities of life, retreats into the more controllable fantasy world of his fiction.
Woody Allen has played a moralist in many of his earlier films but when rumors of child molestation and seduction of a stepdaughter of his partner broke out there has been a shift in the characters he portrays and writes about.

D.W. Reitinger: Review of Nichols, Reconstructing Woody
Mary P. Nichols' Reconstructing Woody: Art, Love, and Life in the Films of Woody Allen is a text full of valuable insights, especially in the way it examines the philosophical nature of a number of Woody Allen's films.
Allen Bloom also weighs in with The Closing of the American Mind (1987), as does Susan Sontag with Against Interpretation (1961), but these are as close to what academic poststructuralist film study critics may expect.
Reading Nichols' Reconstructing Woody sparked me to make the highly unlikely mental association between Woody Allen and Ernest Hemingway, two artists who have little in common in terms of their thematic approaches to their art, or, for that matter, to their approaches to their lives.
