The community is currently celebrating the centenary of its crossing from Douai in Northern France to Woolhampton in Berkshire, and a variety of events and activities have been planned to celebrate the history, witness and continuing mission of a community which boast no less than 160 martyrs among its past members.
The Benedictine community now known as Douai Abbey was founded in Paris in 1615 and took St Edmund, the king and martyr who had been patron of the medieval monastery of Bury St Edmunds, as its patron.
In 1903 the laws of association which led to the separation of Church and State in France forced the community to be uprooted for a second time and the monastery and school were offered a new home at St Mary’s College, Woolhampton in Berkshire by the Bishop of Portsmouth, John Baptist Cahill.
