London - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
London (pronounced [ˈlʌndən]) is the capital city of England and of the United Kingdom.
London's metropolitan area grew considerably during the Victorian era and again during the Interwar period with expansion halted in the 1940s by World War II and Green Belt legislation and has been largely static since.
London's other financial hub is the Docklands area in the east of the city, dominated by the Canary Wharf complex, whilst many other businesses locate in the City of Westminster which is the home of the UK's national government.

Woolwich Arsenal, London, England, 1874   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The big gun that was built at Woolwich Arsenal for her Majesty's ship Devastation was called "the Woolwich Infant" by way of a joke upon its size.
Its parents could not, indeed, have pleaded in their excuse as a young mother is said to have pleaded for her babe—that it was "only a little one;" but a fault it certainly was, for the experimental discharges cracked this mighty piece of ordnance in a most decisive manner.
Not much blame, therefore, is due to the original bantling of Woolwich Arsenal, which was recast in a better form; but the great guns of more recent construction, weighing likewise 35 tons each, are designed to endure a more severe ordeal of their strength.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: London
London, the capital of England and chief city of the British Empire, is situated about fifty miles from the mouth of the Thames, Lat.
In 314 Restitutus, Bishop of London, was present at the Council of Arles, and legend purports to have preserved the names of several of his predecessors and successors (Geoffrey of Monmouth), a claim which the modern historian, Dr. Stubbs (Episcopal Succession), treats with respect.
London at this time consisted of a collection of low wooden houses thatched with reeds or straw, thus affording combustible material for the numerous and destructive fires which frequently broke out, as in 1087 when the greater part of the city, including St. Paul's, was burnt.

London, England, the capital of the United Kingdom, on the River Thames in southeastern England.
London was founded in the first century CE by Romans, who called the swampy area Londinium; it grew in importance over the centuries, and by the early Middle Ages was the most important city in all of Britain.
During the eighteenth century, London grew considerably, both in population, as hundreds of thousands of people from the country moved to the metropolis, and in size, as the many suburbs surrounding London were developed.
