Worcester was the site of the Battle of Worcester (September 3, 1651), in which Charles II's attempt to retake the country from Cromwell and the Parliamentarians was decisively defeated, in the fields a little to the west and south of the city, near the village of Powick.
Worcester was one of the cities loyal to the King in that war, for which it was given the epithet "The Faithful City".
Worcester is also the seat of the famous public schools the Royal Grammar School Worcester founded ante 1291, and the Worcester Cathedral School which was founded in 1541 under King Henry VIII as The King's School, Worcester.The Alice Ottley School and Saint Mary's Convent School are others in the area.

Worcester has seen occupation since prehistory and there was an Iron Age village in the area of Lich Street (Whitehead, 1976, p11).
The antiquity of the church of St Helen’s in Worcester has been illustrated by Steven Bassett (1991) who presented a powerful case for this church pre-dating the cathedral and at least the possibility of it being originally a Roman Church.
Although the first bishop was a monk, the original foundation of Worcester Cathedral, the church of St Peter, seems to have been as a house of secular canons.

There is a story occasionally circulated that says Benning Wentworth named this town to remind George III that Worcester in England was where Cromwell and his Parliamentarian army had routed Charles II in 1651.
Worcester has some half-dozen peaks of over 3,000 feet perhaps the best known of which is Hunger Mountain, so named by a party of early 19th century deer hunters caught in the woods at nightfall with only a solitary partridge to show for a day's hunting.
Mount Worcester, though not as high as Hunger, is even more wild and desolate: a plane which crashed on the mountain wasn't found until a group of hikers stumbled upon it years later.

The Worcester State College baseball team, needed a sweep of the visiting Rams of Framingham State and a little help to return to the MASCAC postseason tournament and they got both to earn the fourth seed in the tournament which begins next week.
Worcester State answered right back in the bottom of the inning when Jeff LaHair (Worcester, MA) knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Worcester State now stands at 18-20 on the year having finished up MASCAC action with an even 7-7 record.

The Worcester State College softball team needed a sweep of the visiting Rams of Framingham State College to make it into the MASCAC postseason tournament but fell shy as they split with the visitors falling in game one, 5-2, before taking the second game, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at Rockwood Field in Worcester.
Worcester State held a, 1-0, lead through three innings as Lisi knocked in an unearned run for Worcester State.
In game two, Worcester State got runs in each of the first four innings to lead, 7-1, after five innings.
