Word Entertainment is home to some of Christian music's top performers and songwriters, including platinum-selling and award-winning artists Amy Grant, Rachael Lampa, Nicole C. Mullen, Sandi Patty, Point Of Grace, Marc Schultz, Sixpence None The Richer and Jaci Velasquez.
The Word Entertainment transaction is expected to close in January 2002.
Malcolm Mimms will remain on as president and chief operating officer and Word will continue to be based in Nashville, Tenn. Word Entertainment is home to more than 30 active artists on several record labels and has a catalog containing more the 75,000 masters.

The CEO of Word Entertainment is Jim Van Hook, former chairman and CEO of Provident Music Group and first dean of the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business at Belmont University in Nashville.
Word Records was founded in 1951 when a young sportscaster for a local Waco, Texas radio station named Jarrell McCracken recorded a play-by-play description with sound effects called The Game Of Life.
Word became successful to the point that after it was sold by McCracken in 1974, it was variously owned through the years by ABC/Capitol Cities, Thomas Nelson Publishers, Gaylord Entertainment, and Warner Music Group who purchased Word for $84.1 million in December 2001.

For most of the 1960s through 1980s, Word was the distributor of choice to Christian bookstores, and distributed at various times such later giants as Light, Star Song, and Reunion, as well as dozens of smaller labels like NewPax, Good News, Seed, Solid Rock, and others.
Word's numbering system used the SPCN system for distribution to Christian bookstores from 1983 to 1997.
Word had relocated from Waco to the Dallas area in the 1980s, and with the purchase by Nelson, moved to Nashville.
