Nothing earnest about Oscar Wilde film
With over stylised settings and rapid-fire repartee, the film a great vehicle for the subtle witticisms and wordplay that Oscar Wilde is famous for.
But what makes the film is the underlying elements: the subtle poking of fun at the upper classes, the humour in the absurdness of Victorian life and the ever-so-slightly camp presentation of the relationship between Jack and Algernon.
No movie based on a play by Oscar Wilde would be complete without an acknowledgement of the homosexual, and the film does it in an admirable way with some of the more memorable scenes in the film involving the two young suitors fighting over a bowl of muffins and a handful of flowers.

Pacino, Depp excel in powerful `Donnie Brasco'
As Donnie gets in over his head, he delights in the wordplay, too: how "forget about it" (pronounced "fuhgeddabutid") can mean as many as half a dozen things, most innocently "yes" and "you're welcome," depending on the context.
The film's critical scene is the one in which Lefty must confront his suspicion of what Donnie is. The filmmakers are far too smart to have Lefty say what he suspects in so many words.
The process of the film is to show Joe going so dangerously undercover that he might not be able to go home again.

Woody Allen's film 'Deconstructing Harry' is his most ambitious work since 'Hannah and Her Sisters.' Its satirical wit and structural complexity allow Allen to present to viewers a fascinating character study of a destructive writer who, unable to deal with the realities of life, retreats into the more controllable fantasy world of his fiction.
Woody Allen has played a moralist in many of his earlier films but when rumors of child molestation and seduction of a stepdaughter of his partner broke out there has been a shift in the characters he portrays and writes about.

Actor Marlon Brando, 80, Dies (washingtonpost.com)
Marlon Brando, 80, a film star whose blend of sensitivity and savagery brought him acclaim as the greatest actor of his generation and whose tumultuous personal life made him a fascinating spectacle in popular culture, died July 1 in a Los Angeles hospital, the actor's lawyer said today.
The filmed version of "Streetcar" launched him onscreen, but Brando was upset when he lost the Oscar for best actor to Bogart in "The African Queen." Film historians considered Bogart's win "sentimental," and for Brando the loss burnished his dismissive views of the film community.
Brando said he made many of his later films for the money -- he reportedly made $3.7 million for 12 days of work on "Superman." But he never seemed anything short of mesmerizing, whether as a cross-dressing hired gun in the western "The Missouri Breaks" (1976) or a mischievous Mafia don in "The Freshman" (1990).

DVD Verdict Review - Fractured Flickers: The Complete Collection
Transposing the same kind of wacky wordplay, outrageous satire, and lowbrow slapstick that made those shows so successful to the fertile territory of Hollywood's Golden Age, Fractured Flickers wittily bulldozed through a wealth of silent film heritage by adding comedic dubbed voices and sound effects to re-edited films.
The flickers themselves are very scratchy, with poor contrast and major source artifacts, but since part of the show's charm lies in the damaged film stock, this is forgivable.
Fractured Flickers, Jay Ward and Bill Scott's first and only live action series, came hot on the heels of the success of their groundbreaking cartoons Rocky and his Friends and The Bullwinkle Show.

 Spartan Movie Review
Spartan is the latest film from writer/director David Mamet, a legendary playwright who I believe to be one of the finest screenwriters of the last twenty years (I would rank him among the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Steven Zallian).
As is the case with most of Mamet's projects, Spartan is extremely talkie and chalk full of colorful wordplay, (although it should be noted that the use of the "F" word is not nearly as prominent as it's been in some of his past pictures).
For whatever reason, Rebecca Pidgeon (a Mamet film regular) is nowhere to be found among the terrific cast.

Shaolin Soccer (Chinese:少林足球; Pinyin: Shàolín Zúqiú) is a 2001 Hong Kong comedy directed by acclaimed HK comedian, actor and director, Stephen Chow.

The Audio Revolution Review of 'Chicken Run'
The puns come thick and fast, but never at the expense of the film’s internal consistency; we laugh at the wordplay without being yanked out of the movie’s world.
However, the story and characterizations – especially the easily-readable emotions on the faces of the claymation figures – draw us in so thoroughly that for long stretches, we lose sight of all the hard work involved and are completely caught up in the film’s charming lunacy.
"Effortless" is a word that springs to mind while watching ‘Chicken Run.’ This is irrational – few techniques in filmmaking are more painstaking and time-consuming than stop-motion animation.

A scene where Ting Ting’s interest in cosmetics is taken by Chou to mean that she is a prostitute thanks to a miscommunication from his mother comes out surprisingly funnily despite the poor translation - it’s an entire sequence that takes place in the wordplay.
The film came out not long after the pioneering Wu Xia Pan stylistics of Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain (1983), which largely started off the whole flying swordsman fad, and comes filled with all the striking acrobatics of the Hong Kong fantasy film.
