Words and Music - Frank Lachmann
As in analysis, in music, working through is not designed to eliminate the impact of the old, but to embed it in a variety of new contexts, which provide the old with a richer texture in the present.
In music, transformations are accomplished through "figures of speech" and similar devices: thesis and antithesis, opposition of consonance and dissonance, imitation, alliteration, varieties of rhythms, harmonic progressions, symmetry and repetitions.
Progress in music is built on two interconnected universals: the harmonic series assuring the survival of tonality, and a musical syntax which, like poetry, utilizes metaphors, and recognizes the appeal of symmetry and repetition as well as violations of expectations.

Paradoxically, Harrison Birtwistle's mythic The Last Supper (words mostly lost but meaning, through ritual and repetition, startlingly clear) was if anything weakened by the use of surtitles, which showed up the shortcomings of the libretto and diverted attention from the fierce drama of the music itself.

 Beckett - Music: Morton Feldman
Encouraging the younger composer to follow his instincts, to open his music to indeterminacy, and to challenge all forms of received tradition, John Cage became a mentor and even something of a father-figure, and their friendship lasted the rest of their lives.
He wanted his music to be more direct, immediate, a "physical sound-world" that grew from "vertical" explorations of sound color derived from the material properties of instruments themselves.
Underpinning these great tapestries of sound are often deep structures of arcane mathematics and theory; though he disdained discussion of his music along purely technical lines, his scores are filled with subtle puzzles and "eye music," and are frequently viewed as works of art in of themselves.
