 Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown: Winter Fellowship
In 1968, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown was founded by a group of artists, writers, and patrons including Fritz Bultman, Alan Dugan, Stanley Kunitz, Phil Malicoat, Robert Motherwell, Myron Stout, Jack Tworkov and Hudson D. Walker.
They believed that the freedom to pursue creative work within a community of peers was the best catalyst for artistic growth, and the Work Center has dedicated itself to this goal for almost thirty years.
Eligibility: Fine Arts Work Center Fellowships are open to writers and visual artists in the emerging stages of their careers.

Students interested in the Art Education program may indicate this when they are freshman if desired, but they MUST declare their option by the start of the sophomore year, at which time they should make an appointment with the coordinator of Art Education for an interview.
In the Fall semester the course is FA 3900, Introduction to Art Education I, and in the Spring it is FA 390l, Introduction to Art Education II.
Work during this semester is strenuous: students are advised to avoid taking more than one additional course unless there is an emergency ‹for example, if the one additional course is essential in order to graduate at the end of the student teaching semester.

The first two years of Fine Arts provide the student with a strong foundation in the design, production, history, and appreciation of traditional and contemporary visual arts.
Students meeting the prerequisites of a minimum of two years in either fine arts or crafts must submit a portfolio of 15 - 20 original works of art, have their art teacher's recommendation, and take part in an interview if they wish to be considered for this program.

Fine arts majors are required to concentrate in either painting, drawing, sculpture, photography or printmaking: Fine Arts 101-123, two different 200-level courses outside the area of concentration; two 200-level courses and one 300-level course within that area; three art history courses to be taken at Bryn Mawr College, and Senior Departmental Studies 499.

In today’s art world, where the line is often blurred between two-dimensional practice and other fields, it is common to see artists who are nominally painters creating installations and/or using a wide array of materials.
The Fine Arts Work Center was founded in 1968 by concerned artists, writers and patrons, including Stanley Kunitz, Alan Dugan, Robert Motherwell and Hudson Walker.
Students work in an intensive fashion with a pre-approved mentor for the two second-year non-residency periods creating a body of focused work—a portion of which is included in the Thesis Exhibition.

The student work is hung throughout the library, and a map is posted showing where each piece is located, in addition to titles of works, artists, dimensions and materials.
The show is part of the pre-thesis curriculum for fine arts students as part of the preparation for their thesis shows, which will go up in Tjaden Hall's Gallery and Experimental Studio during the spring 2005 semester.
