Crown copyright - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crown copyright applies to all works produced by the British Government, subject to the condition that the qualification "Where a work is made by Her Majesty or by an officer or servant of the Crown in the course of his duties" is met.
Works where copyright is assigned to the Crown by an author are subject to the normal term of protection for that particular type of work, for example life of the author plus 70 years for a literary work.
In practice, government materials are often licensed to the public for non-commercial use under the conditions that 1) due diligence is taken to ensure accuracy, 2) the source is identified, and 3) the material is not represented as an official version.

Work of the United States Government - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A work of the United States Government is, as defined by United States copyright law, "a work prepared by an officer or employee of the United States Government as part of that person's official duties." The term only applies to the work of the federal government, not state or local governments.
Certain works, particularly logos of government agencies, while not copyrightable, are still protected by other laws similar in effect to trademark laws, protecting indicators of source or quality.
For example, the federal government purchased the United States copyright to Madison's Notes from Dolley Madison for $30,000 upon Madison's death.

Federal law overrides state law in the areas that the federal government is empowered to act, but the powers of the federal government are subject to limits outlined in the Constitution of the United States.
The federal government of the United States is comprised of a Legislative Branch (led by the Congress), an Executive Branch (led by the President), and a Judicial Branch (led by the Supreme Court).

 MegaLaw - Copyright Act
Although the wording of the definition of ''work of the United States Government'' differs somewhat from that of the definition of ''work made for hire,'' the concepts are intended to be construed in the same way.
As the bill is written, the Government agency concerned could determine in each case whether to allow an independent contractor or grantee, to secure copyright in works prepared in whole or in part with the use of Government funds.
The use of the term ''work of the United States Government'' does not mean that a work falling within the definition of that term is the property of the U.S. Government.

U.S. Copyright Office - Copyright Basics (Circular 1)

When a work is published, it may bear a notice of copyright to identify the year of publication and the name of the copyright owner and to inform the public that the work is protected by copyright.
A work that is created (fixed in tangible form for the first time) on or after January 1, 1978, is automatically protected from the moment of its creation and is ordinarily given a term enduring for the author's life plus an additional 70 years after the author's death.

However, the structure of the United States was profoundly changed in 1788 when the states replaced the Articles of Confederation with the United States Constitution; often, sources use the date each of the original 13 states adopted the Constitution as the date on that state "entered the Union" (became part of the United States).
The government of the United States may be accurately categorized as a republic or as a liberal democracy.
A case may be appealed from a state court to a federal court only if there is a federal question, the supreme court of a state is the final authority on the interpretation of that state's laws and constitution.
