The Workers Opposition in Nazi Germany - Tim Mason
Soon, however, key groups of skilled workers, and shortly, thereafter all wage earners, found themselves in a situation in which they could sell their labour power to the highest bidder: by the end of 1938 there were 1 million vacancies, a million unfilled jobs, in the German economy as a whole.
That the great denial by the workers did indeed carry this political implication was indirectly acknowledged by the regime itself: for the repeated warnings to workers to turn up on time, to work conscientiously, etc., all brought home to them the political, economic and military consequences of their poor work morale.
My evidence suggests, however, that oppositional forms of behaviour in industry were widespread before the KPD adopted this strategy, and were not dependent upon underground encouragement for their vitality; further, that underground resistance workers, for very good reasons, did not themselves play a prominent role in oppositional activities.

The Workers Opposition began to form in 1919, as a result of the policies of War Communism, which had set a precedence for the domination of the Communist Party over local party affiliates and trade unions.

The massacre at El Dorado intended to intimidate the movement had the opposite effect; public opinion turned overwhelmingly in favor of the Landless Workers Movement and the MST responded by launching a new wave of land occupations throughout the country.
The key to the success of the rural-urban alliance is the extension and consolidation of a powerful rural movement that serves both as a point of support for the MST in its national negotiations as well as a catalyst for the urban movements and parties to deepen their own involvement in grassroots organizing.
The growth of landless workers, the decline of small farmer agriculture, and the expansion of large landed estates have provided a propitious terrain for the MST to expand its influence and heighten its appeal.
