Workers' International League (1937) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Workers' International League was a Trotskyist political party in the United Kingdom.
The Fourth International was formed in 1938, and the WIL refused to merge into the newly formed official British affiliate, the Revolutionary Socialist League itself a regroupment of the Marxist group and others.
By 1944, the Fourth International had realised that the WIL were far more effective and closer to the FI's policies than the RSL which had disintegrated into a set of warring factions, and so coordinated a unity conference.

His entryist tactics found a hearing in the leadership of the Fourth International, and in 1950 the FI ordered their Revolutionary Communist Party to dissolve into Healy's Club, forming the Socialist Labour League (SLL).
He was expelled from the WRP and the International Committee by his lieutenant, Cliff Slaughter, and Healy subsequently formed a rival organization in 1987 — the Marxist Party.

 Socialist Standard September 2006 page12
Of the two small British Trotskyist groupings of the time, the Balham Group and the Revolutionary Socialist League (later to be called the Militant Labour League, selling a newspaper called Militant), Grant and his colleagues were attracted towards the latter.
This 'Fourth International' cast around for a British section, but the tiny group around Grant, Haston and Healy was ignored and the franchise went instead to the larger Militant Labour League.
During the Second World War, Grant's WIL was active on the industrial front and soon began to eclipse its parent organisation in both membership and influence - so much so, that by 1944 the Fourth International persuaded the two organisations to merge, in what was effectively a WIL takeover.

 Revolutionaries and World War II
Desperate not to see the overthrow of capitalism by workers revolution in the West, the Stalinist bureaucracy ordered the re-emerging Communist parties in Italy and France to instruct the workers to disarm and join the governments of the supposedly progressive “democratic” bourgeoisie.
Had the workers made their revolution, under the kind of leadership the Trotskyists were fighting to build, there was every chance that the working-class conscripts of the American and British armies in Italy and France would have refused to crush them and indeed supported them.
The Workers International League, however, embraced it—though there was opposition to it within the party.
