  What is Workflow
The automation of a business process, in whole or part, during which documents, information or tasks are passed from one participant* to another for action, according to a set of procedural rules.
The Evolution of Workflow Workflow Management consists of the automation of business procedures or "workflows" during which documents, information or tasks are passed from one participant to another in a way that is governed by rules or procedures.
Workflow software products, like other software technologies, have evolved from diverse origins.

Workflow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
More specifically, workflow is the operational aspect of a work procedure: how tasks are structured, who performs them, what their relative order is, how they are synchronized, how information flows to support the tasks and how tasks are being tracked.
Business workflows are more generic, being able to represent any structuring of tasks, and are equally applicable to task scheduling within a software application server and organizing a paper or electronic document trail within an organization.
Workflow diagram systems are defined as "systems that help organizations to specify, execute, monitor, and coordinate the flow of work cases within a distributed office environment".

SWIM: State of the Art in Workflow
Workflow is a domain that has evolved from several fields, business management, modeling, simulation and, to a lesser extent, planning and control.
The workflow engine must maintain all the knowledge and internal control data to identify the states of each of the individually instantiated activities, transition conditions, connections among processes (for example, parent/child relationships), and performance metrics.
Workflow failures may result from a processing entity not completing a task correctly or on time, or by an unexpected event in the environment.

Workflow - Simple, flexible system to implement workflows - search.cpan.org
Workflow - When you get the workflow object from the workflow factory you can only use it in a few ways -- asking for the current state, actions available for the state, data required for a particular action, and most importantly, executing a particular action.
Workflow has its own context, and actions executed by the workflow can read data from and deposit data into the context.
To allow the workflow to run into multiple environments we must have a common way to move data between your application, the workflow and the code that moves it from one state to another.

typo3.org: Workflow Engine   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A workflow, or workflow-process defines the predetermined succession of work steps, or activities, executed by various users of a common system who differ in terms of rights, tasks and access rights.
The Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC, an international association of leading software vendors defining relevant standards and models) further defines workflow as "the automation of a business process, in whole or part, during which documents, information or tasks are passed from one participant to another for action, according to a set of procedural rules".
The most likely scenario for a workflow process will probably be the review cycles through which the system iterates the status of the content.

 Workflow
Workflow is a feature of the Integrated System that can be adapted for various modules because it is interactive.  In the UVA GA setup, workflow was set to initiate when a project is funded by an award for the first time.
The "Approver" who was automatically notified via e-mail will navigate to the GA Workflow Notifications Summary window and reviews the new or modified projects.  The changes are either approved or rejected.  If the changes are rejected, the rejection is explained in the comments section.
If award oversight 1 does not respond to the workflow notice within the timeout period the workflow notice will then be forwarded to award oversight 2.  If award oversight 2 does not respond within the timeout period the workflow notice will then be forwarded to the second level (central) for approval.

The Lazy Person's Guide to Workflow
The tedious part of building a workflow system is ensuring that every action executed by every actor in every role for every activity in the process is accounted for somewhere in the workflow system.
At the execution level, each iteration of a workflow process is considered an "enactment." This consists of a unique enactment ID number, a reference to the process being enacted, a reference to current activity within that process, binding actors and roles to activities and matching arguments to values.
The goal of workflow management is to handle the enactment of those cases as efficiently and effectively as possible.

The workflow scripting should be kept as simple as possible so that most of the processor time is spent inside of application methods rather than parsing, managing, and executing the script.
Workflows used with My Xaml can take advantage of the parsing features of My Xaml--in particular, using the "def:" prefix to add the workflow processor or other child elements to the parser's definition list for reference in your code, and using the "{}" syntax to reference objects declared outside of the workflow.

The workflow runtime also provides common facilities for handling errors and compensating transactions to allow either automatic or customized undo logic to be specified for long-running units of work.
Causing the workflow to activate is a two phase process: First, you load the program in memory by instantiating WorkflowRuntime and calling the CreateWorkflow method on it, passing either the XAML definition as XML or a compiled activity type.
Except for the Initialize method (which is called synchronously when the workflow is first started by the host), all of the methods return the state that the activity is in when it returns control to the runtime.
