The purpose of a directory is to organize files, keeping each group (directory) of files separate from other groups.
Furthermore, your home directory is actually a subdirectory within a larger directory (one containing all users' home directories for your class).
When using the home directory, the path name is not necessary since unix will automatically place files within the home directory unless a specific directory path name is specified.

You should always change your working directory to the one in which your files are held (with the exception of data warehouse tables).
Sometimes when you exit from Paradox and then go on to delete the directory you were in when in Paradox, when you next enter Paradox you will get a message saying that the directory no longer exists.
