Workington is a town on the west coast of Cumbria, England at the mouth of the River Derwent.
Workington has a non league and former professional football team, Workington Reds, as well as a Pro rugby league and former challenge cup winning team, Workington Town, and a professional speedway team, the Workington Comets.
Workington is home to a tradition known as "Uppies and Downies", an historical version of football, dating to Medieval times.

The Workington, No. 32,476, was a brig of 150 tons register, and was owned by Mr Dyer, of Sydney, who was a passenger on board at the time of the casualty.
We regret to learn the loss of the brig Workington, 150 tons, from Melbourne for Bluff Harbour, with general cargo; she having experienced heavy weather in Foveaux Straits, and having six feet water in the hold, was ran ashore on Stewart's Island, where she became a total wreck.

The station at Workington was established in 1886 and a lifeboat house and slipway were constructed.
The station operated pulling and sailing lifeboats until 1905 when the station was temporarily closed due to problems in obtaining a site for the lifeboat house, in the event the station was not to reopen, it being closed permanently.
In 1948 the station at Workington was reopened following and increasing shipping levels in the Solway Firth and the closure of the neighboring station of Maryport.
