Workplace Shell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Workplace Shell (WPS) is an award-winning object-oriented desktop shell produced by IBM's Boca Raton development lab for OS/2 2.0.
The Workplace Shell was also used in OS/2 Warp 3 and Warp 4 (now abandoned by IBM), and is still the user interface of the revamped successor to OS/2 called eComStation of Serenity Inc.
Although mostly written in C, under the covers the Workplace Shell is implemented as an object-oriented class library, basing on the System Object Model (SOM).

 Object Desktop 2.0
Each Workplace Shell object is managed by an OS/2 System Object Model (SOM) class which is responsible for providing the behavior of the object as it is seen on the OS/2 Desktop.
Each class is invoked by the Workplace Shell via a class name and files containing executable code that provides the class behavior resides in one or dynamic link libraries (DLLs).
Workplace Shell objects are essentially DLLs, and hence the LIBPATH statement may need to be updated in order to enable use of some Workplace Shell classes.

The parent class for the newly generated object class is specified in the SOM IDL file, which, in the case of Workplace Shell objects, is one of the preexisting classes defined by the default OS/2 Workplace Shell.
Although there are several object types in the Workplace Shell (see the figure), there are several reasons for using the WPFolder class as a parent class.
Because of this capability, Workplace Shell developers enjoy receiving new features for free as versions of the OS are released with changes to base classes.

For many OS/2 users the WPS (Workplace Shell) is the only operating environment they know, or more to the point, the only environment they need.
While a replacement shell offers a smooth operating environment by being less demanding on your hardware, what you can do in your shell is likely to be limited.
Not only is the act of using a replacement shell secure (since the new shell is likely to be limited) but some shells, such as FileBar (see next page), also include security features that affect the shell and the applications themselves.

VOICE Newsletter 09/2004 - Ini file management
Unfortunately, one of OS/2's few weaknesses is in the Workplace Shell's handling of its ini files (os2.ini and os2sys.ini).
Because many of the Workplace Shell features like Program Objects, Printer Objects, FTP-PM Objects, desktop layout and more, are kept in the os2*.ini files, changes to these are lost at the end of the session.
That is inconvenient for systems which make frequent changes to the Workplace Shell or system configuration, so this technique is not appropriate for those systems.

Overview of the OS/2 Operating System
In looking at how the Workplace Shell is implemented, it is useful to separate the shell from the underlying workplace facilities, since the same facilities are needed by both the shell and by all applications which run under the shell.
The Workplace Shell avoids this requirement by allowing a developer to register a small object which understands all the capabilities of the application, and can call the relevant parts of the main application when required.
The Workplace Shell implements the standard PM Print rendering mechanism(DRM_PRINT); after a successful drop, the source icon is sent a "DM_PRINTOBJECT" message with the name of the relevant print queue as one of its parameters.
