Wes Montgomery was one of the great jazz guitarists, a natural extension of Charlie Christian whose appealing use of octaves became influential and his trademark.
His jazz fans were upset but Montgomery's albums were played on AM radio during the period, he helped introduce listeners to jazz and his live performances were as freewheeling as his earlier Riverside dates.
Among the gems are live recordings of a quintet that includes the accelerated tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin and bassist Paul Chambers, as well as the studio recordings where Montgomery matches talents with Milt Jackson and the fine pianists Tommy Flanagan and Hank Jones.

Motown Records, Inc., also known as Tamla-Motown outside of the United States, is a record label originally based out of Detroit, Michigan ("Motor City"), where it achieved widespread international success.
Therefore, in 1959, he started his own record label, Tamla Records with an $800 loan from his family; his first signed act was The Matadors, who changed their name to The Miracles.

It was not unusual for Ken to work a television recording session in the morning playing rock guitar, a jingle session in the afternoon with a country flavor and a big band jazz show in downtown Los Angeles in the evening.

By 1959, he recorded the first jazz instrumental piece to sell a million copies, entitled Desmond's Take Five (in 5/4 meter), which was released with his own Blue Rondo a la Turk (in 9/8, grouped 2+2+2+3).
Brubeck, who considers himself in essence "a composer who plays the piano," has written and, in some instances, recorded several large-scale compositions since the 1960s, including two ballets, a musical, an oratorio, four cantatas, a mass, works for jazz group and orchestra, and many pieces for solo piano.
In 1976, Brubeck performed and recorded again with Desmond, Morello, and Wright to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the formation of his first quartet.

He is leader and principal composer of the Jazz Passengers, a six piece group that he founded with Curtis Fowlkes in 1987.
In 1997 he arranged a Serge Gainsbourg song for the Jazz Passengers and Deborah Harry for a Virgin France compilation, and set a poem by Edgar Allen Poe which was released on a Poe compilation produced by Hal Willner.
