13th International Laser Ranging Workshop | Scientific Achievements Session Summary
The most important aspect of the laser ranging technique is its absolute character, i.e., the extremely accurate (down to several mm in an absolute sense) observation of the distance between a ground station and a satellite target.
This was followed by a presentation by Scharroo, on one of the main applications of the SLR technique: orbit determination for altimeter satellites.
Gross gave a presentation on the long-standing role of SLR in the observation of the rotational dynamics of the Earth.

Artificial Life VII: Workshops and Tutorials
The aim of the workshop is to give a survey of the history and the current work in Digital Life research, as well as to discuss its possible future in the biological sciences.
Therefore the second reason for this workshop is to bring together researchers that have studied this phenomenon and to apprise collectively the past, present and future status of the effort.
Given that the workshop is taking place as part of an artificial life conference, the organisers are particularly keen to encourage submissions and participation from researchers in the biological and industrial fields.

Unfortunately, as a regulatory Agency, given the lack of scientific information and studies at this juncture, it might be considered irresponsible for the Agency at this point in time to routinely require our licensees to take into account migratory birds.
Presently, in the scheme of things that we have, I would say there probably isn't much flexibility other than if there is something out there where you could configure the lights and approach it from a standpoint of an experiment.
And that was one of the intents of this workshop this afternoon - public education.

 Interfaces to Scientific Data Archives
The objective of the workshop was to try to answer a set of discussion questions in the context of the case studies, using small group discussion, and the results from the five groups are reported in Section 7.
Scientific data archives contain valuable information that may be useful for a very long time, for example climate and remote-sensing data, long-term observations of astronomical phenomena, or protein sequences from extinct species.
In the case of scientific archives, extensions could be made with high-level descriptors to describe the datasets, or by the use of domain-specific schemes, refining semantics of the core elements.

A scientific workshop was held in London on Tuesday 28 March 2000, organised by the government’s Central Science Laboratory.
They presented evidence that electrophysiological techniques can detect changes in neurotransmission, which can occur after the lowering of acetylcholinesterase due to multiple low-dose OP exposure, but that more sensitive biomarkers are needed.
The current dominance of mechanistic scientific research, much of it funded by the private sector, over publicly-funded preventative scientific research, is recognised as being at the root of the OP problem.
