The fair was also the occasion for the 1st World Science Fiction Convention, subsequently dubbed Nycon 1.
On July 4, 1940 the fair hosted "Superman Day." Notable was the crowning of the "superboy and supergirl" of the day, and a public appearance by Superman, played by actor Ray Middleton; the first time any had played the role.
World's Fair (now Willets Point-Shea Stadium) station on the IRT Flushing Line was rebuilt to handle fair traffic on the IRT and BMT.

It was held in conjunction with the city of New York's 300th anniversary of British forces under the command of the Duke of York gaining control of the Dutch city of New Amsterdam in 1664.
The problem was that the fair wasn't sanctioned by the Bureau of International Expositions because world's fairs are limited to one year runs.
In some ways the World's Fair two year run was a success and yet monetarily it was not.
