World Boxing Organisation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The World Boxing Organization, or WBO is one of many organizations which sanction professional championship boxing bouts, alongside the WBA, WBC, IBF and a dozen or so others.
The WBO was founded by Francisco Valcarcel and other members of the WBC, who broke away from the organization following a dispute.
Despite serious efforts by the organization to be recognized by the public as the "fourth" world sanctioning body for pro boxing over its 15 year history, the WBO has become little more than the "best of the also-ran" organizations, and its championships carry little real prestige.

The self-styled Prince from Sheffield had held the WBO belt for five years but his relationship with the Puerto Rican sanctioning body fell apart over his refusal to box No 1 contender Istvan Kovacs, of Hungary.
The WBO will inevitably produce a new champion - Kovacs will box for the vacant title - which will add confusion to an already muddled situation, but Hamed has every right to continue his claim to be the best featherweight in the world, belt or no belt.
He defended the WBO title 15 times, and also held the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council titles only to be forced into a situation where he had to relinquish them.
