The WBC bolstered the legitimacy of women’s boxing by recognizing fighters such as Christy “The Coalminer’s Daughter” Martin and Lucia Rijker as contenders for World Female titles in 16 weight divisions.
The WBC's green championship belt portrays the flags of all of the countries it represents; the flags of the original 12 member-nations are displayed on the belt’s ovular, gold center-plate (surrounding a boxer raising his arm in victory).
The WBC is one of many organizations which sanction world championship boxing bouts, alongside the International Boxing Federation(IBF), the World Boxing Association (WBA), and the World Boxing Organization (WBO), and a dozen or so others.

Tyson, 35, had been scheduled to take on Lewis in April in the boxing Mecca of Las Vegas, but the state athletic commission refused to renew the New Yorker's lapsed licence after the news conference fracas.
The proposed heavyweight fight has had problems finding a host, being rejected by several potential venues in the U.S. because of a brawl at a Tyson-Lewis news conference in New York in January after which the Briton accused Tyson of biting him in the leg.

 Audley looking for shot at European Title
Olympic Gold Medallist and current unbeaten heavyweight contender Audley “A-Force” Harrison (19-0, 14KOs) has today called on the European Boxing Union to consider him for a fight with Paolo Vidoz.
It was Harrison who ended the Italian's Olympic dream by defeating him in the semi-final in Sydney where Harrison went on to win Britain's first boxing gold medal for 32 years.
Harrison, currently ranked seventh by the EBU feels that he deserves a chance to challenge Vidoz following the Italian's successful defence of his title against Michael Sprott on October 1st.
