The WCSC is an official team world championship if teams of at least 7 different countries participate.

He is arguably the most highly acclaimed chess writer in the world, with two of his books receiving the prestigious British Chess Federation Book of the Year Award.
The last two chapters feature ' The State of The Chess World' and ' Chess Publishing and the Batsford Story', some may view these as a rant against issues affecting John Nunn but personally I found the chapters of interest and helpful in telling the story of this great player.

If chess books don’t offer a decent return on the capital invested, the publisher will either run into financial difficulties or simply stop producing chess books; either situation is very bad for the authors.
Chess is a specialized area and the sales of chess books don’t justify bargain-basement prices.

On 30 March the English Chess Federation finally announced its squads for the Turin Olympiad, which starts on 20 May. The men's/open team is Adams, Short, Speelman, Gormally, Conquest and N Pert, with the top two players' participation being secured thanks to the generous sponsorship of David Norwood.
The final of the women's world championship resulted in a 2½-½ victory for 29-year-old Xu Yuhua of China, ranked number 6 woman in the world, against 34-year-old Alisa Galliamova of Russia, ranked number 18 in the world.
Former world chess champion Bobby Fischer was detained by the Japanese Immigration Bureau at Tokyo's Narita Airport on 13 July for failing to possess valid travel documents.

 CHESS PROBLEM NEWS, by John Rice
A steady afternoon's solving ensured first prize for FIDE Solving Master Michael McDowell in the Final of this event, held at Oakham School on 16th February.
World Champions were Germany (not for the first time by any means), followed by Finland and Israel.
At the 2002 meeting of this Commission, held in September in Slovenia alongside the World Solving Championship reported on above, John was elected President for the next four years.

The first International Solving Contest was organised on the 23rd January, 2005.
A rating is a numerical value which a solver gains by solving in two approved tournaments.
It is calculated on the basis of the results of solving tournaments completed (including the report) by the end of June and the end of December.

We conclude the awards of the composing tourneys, organised by congress participants: 5-days long (revised award, the 3rd-4th Prizes are unfortunately anticipated), 3rd Italian Grappa, 3rd Romanian Tzuica, 6th Japanese Sake, Uralsky Problemist and French Champagne.
We plan to have a Quick (Solving) Show this year on Tuesday evening, 6th of September, an idea invented by Ivan Jarolín in 2001 that is quite popular mainly in Slovakia.
The Greek School Chess Championship and the World Chess Championship for visually impaired persons were held at this venue earlier this year.
