World Court, popular name of the Permanent Court of International Justice, established pursuant to Article 14 of the Covenant of the League of Nations.
Established at The Hague, the court was empowered to render judgments in disputes between states that were voluntarily submitted to it and to give advisory opinions in any matters referred to it by the Council or the Assembly of the League.
In the course of its existence, the court rendered 32 judgments and 27 advisory opinions.

The World Court, officially known as the International Court of Justice, is the U.N.'s court for resolving disputes between nations.
It is the third World Court case in five years against the United States dealing with the death penalty.
While it asked the court to stay the execution of all 51 Mexicans on death row, the court said a stay was needed for only the three most urgent cases for now.

The U.N. General Assembly requested an opinion on the barrier in December and the World Court held hearings in February overshadowed by public lobbying from both sides.

The Permanent Court of International Justice, commonly known as the World Court, was first proposed during discussions involving the Treaty of Versailles as an effective replacement for the ineffective Hague Tribunal.
The World Court opened its doors in 1921 after the Covenant of the League of Nations was ratified by forty-two nations (sixty-three governments would join the league before its demise in 1946).
FDR supported the court throughout the 1920s and as a presidential candidate; however, he did not allow Democratic senators to push for the court until late 1934.

The United Nations' highest judiciary, also known as the World Court, was considering a suit filed by Mexico claiming 52 convicted murderers weren't given their right to assistance from their government.
The court found that in the remaining case, the convict had received his rights and his case didn't need to be reviewed.
When the court finally handed down the belated ruling in 2001, it chastised the U.S. government for not halting the LaGrand execution, and rejected arguments that Washington was powerless to intervene in criminal cases under the authority of the individual states.

Most of the States approving the court very probably thought that it would not be used to try their nationals and, if so, were prepared to dissociate themselves from such criminals even if they were in possession of their passport.
It is of crucial importance to a court that its judgments are honored.
It is preferable not to have a world court for human rights at all than to have a half-hearted patched-up institution with insufficient competence and feeble authority.
