Planet World Cup - Mike Gibbons (Columnist) May 21 2005
The currency of football is goals and what the golden boot does mean is that for one summer, should you have been lucky enough to win it, you were in the right place at the right time more than any other player, which is exactly what being a striker is all about.
Croatia made their first appearance in the World Cup in 1998, and their eventual third placed finish was largely due to the inspired form of Davor Suker.
Sharing the golden boot with Salenko (and it's a safe bet this really got under his skin) was Hristo Stoichkov, the charismatic, maniacal forward from Bulgaria.

I have always heard the award given to the player who scored the most goals at a football world cup referred to as the Golden Boot, however there is a case suggesting that it is properly called the Golden Shoe, as shown on the official FIFA website...
Reason: Football World Cup Awards already covers this (plus other awards).
By the way, don't merge as the Golden Boot might not necessarily be a FIFA award Paddy :-) 14:05, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
