World Federalist groups since 1905 had made attempts to cooperate in the U.S. When the (former) World Federalist Association focused on a gradual approach similar to that of the United Nations, the American Movement for World Government (AMWG) was established by Wm.
WFM was also one of the principle organizers of the Hague Appeal for Peace, a global civil society conference held in May 1999 that brought together more than 10,000 activists from around the world.

World Federalism means having democratically accountable political institutions to deal with issues at the most appropriate level, according to the principle of subsidiarity.
I think that world government can be seen as the logical end point of an evolution of political institutions which been in progress for several centuries now.
The Federalist Papers by Hamilton, Madison and Jay (1788) are also well worth reading: although written to support the US federal constitution, many of the arguments are quite general and apply equally well to world federation (indeed in Federalist #43 Madison comes close to arguing for global federation on the US model).
