World Food Day was proclaimed in 1979 by the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The aim of the Day is to heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.
In 1980, the General Assembly endorsed observance of the Day in consideration of the fact that "food is a requisite for human survival and well-being and a fundamental human necessity" (resolution 35/70 of 5 December 1980).

This year’s theme was “Biodiversity for Food Security” and focused on the massive loss of genetic diversity of agricultural crops over the last century.
Since the founding of the FAO in 1945, it is estimated that 400 million people have died from hunger and poor sanitation, more than three times the number of people killed in wars fought during the entire 20th century.

Africa's near absence from the arena of world trade and the need for non-African countries to invest in the continent will be addressed at an upcoming symposium, "Integrating Africa into the Global Economy," at Cornell Oct. 25 and 26.
