		A cultural World Heritage Site is an historic monument, site or group of buildings, which has outstanding universal value, to the whole international community, provided that it satisfies certain criteria specified by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
		Liverpool World Heritage City includes that part of the city which is both authentic and relates strongly to its historic role as a commercial port.
		Liverpool City Council and English Heritage joined forces in 2001 to pursue the nomination and jointly funded the post of a World Heritage Officer.

		The concept "World Heritage Bergen - the Historic Town Centre", therefore embraces primarily those parts of the town that are directly connected with Vågen or are a function of Vågen in the form of urban structure, street plan or economy.
