Liverpool City Council and English Heritage joined forces in 2001 to pursue the nomination and jointly funded the post of a World Heritage Officer.

The concept "World Heritage Bergen - the Historic Town Centre", therefore embraces primarily those parts of the town that are directly connected with Vågen or are a function of Vågen in the form of urban structure, street plan or economy.

Together with Manufakturhuset, a women`s workhouse from the end of the 1700s and the new City Hall, the buildings of the complex have acted as Bergen`s administrative, judicial and penal centre from the end of the middle ages until the present day.
