This inaugural indoor championships took place in a variety of venues in Ontario, in the towns of Oshawa, Mississauga, Kitchener and Hamilton.

John played collegiate lacrosse while completing his Physical Education degree at the University of Delaware and was named USA National College Player of the Year in 1999.

Heritage Cup was created as a promotional vehicle for quadrennial World Indoor Lacrosse Championships (WILC), debuting in May 2003 in southern Ontario.
Although the American and Canadian rosters are expected to be very similar for the May tournament, players selected for Heritage Cup are not guaranteed a spot in the world championships.
