The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is an intergovernmental organization with a membership of 187 Member States and Territories.
Established in 1950, WMO became the specialized agency of the United Nations for meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences.
The current president is Alexander Bedritsky, elected by the 14th World Meteorological Congress held in 2003.

The Twelfth Congress of the WMO in 1995, agreed that the WMO should contribute to the celebration of the important International Year of the Ocean.
The WMO Members were urged to contribute to celebrations at the national level, and requested the Executive Council to arrange for a variety of WMO contributions to the year, both directly and in concert with other United Nations system agencies (see Resolution 17 (Cg-XII)).
The January 1998 numbers of the WMO Bulletin and World Climate News will also be largely devoted to aspects of the general theme of "oceans, weather and climate".

World Meteorological Organization was established on October 11, 1947, Washington D.C., when convention was signed on behalf of 42 states, at the conclusion of the 12th Conference of Directors of International Meteological Organization, an International non-governmental organization found in 1873.
The World Climate Programme (WCP) was established in Geneva, Switzerland in February 1979, following the staging of the First World Climate Conference.
It is co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and the International Council for Science (ICSU).
