The project began on January 29, 2001 as a complement to the expert-written (and now defunct) Nupedia, and is now operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation.
Wiktionary, a dictionary project, was launched in December 2002; Wikiquote, a collection of quotations, a week after Wikimedia launched; and Wikibooks, a collection of collaboratively-written free books, the next month.
For example, the then-new article on the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake on its English edition was cited often by the press shortly after the incident.

 Global Oceanographic Data Archaeology and Rescue
In recognition of the success by the GODAR project, a proposal was presented at the 16th Session of the IODE, which was held in Lisbon, Portugal, in October-November 2000, to establish the World Ocean Database Project.
This project is intended to stimulate international exchange of modern oceanographic data and encourage the development of regional oceanographic databases as well as the implementation of regional quality control procedures.
This new Project was endorsed by the IODE at the conclusion of the Portugal meeting, and the IOC subsequently approved this project in June 2001.

Assumed illumination is from the west; shading is computed as a function of the east-west slope of the surface with a nonlinear exaggeration favoring low-relief areas.
A Cylindrical Equidistant projection was used for the world image, which spans 360 degrees of of longitude from 180 West eastward to 180 East; latitude coverage is from 90 degrees North to 90 degrees South.
IBCAO data were originally gridded in a polar stereographic projection; these data were interpolated along lines of constant latitude at 2 minute steps for every 2 minutes of latitude from 72° North to the pole.

The Ocean Climate Laboratory is publishing a series of World Ocean Database 2001 NOAA Atlases fully describing the source and contents of WOD01.
World Ocean Database 2001 would not be possible without the efforts of all scientists who have collected and submitted data to the National Oceanographic Data Center and the World Data Center for Oceanography, Silver Spring.
The data used in this project are all the data found in the NODC archives as of the first quarter of 1994 as well as some of the data submitted to NODC since 1994.

All DSDP data, and historic core data from Legs 101-129 of the ODP, and (as of March, 2006) all ODP prime data in tab-delimited form, are available for free on-line download from NGDC.
The prime ODP data files are ASCII selections from the ODP JANUS database (see links at left to IODP, which offers the latest, most complete version of the data).

Which is to say we are still in the same world, in which low volumes and other issues cause electric cars to be 50%-100$ higher than traditional cars.
As for why you couldn’t find documentation for this… I’m not sure if there is any, I thought this stuff was common knowledge in the Java world (but if you don’t devel in java, I guess you can’t be expected to know this).
That may very well be the world’s smallest achievement.

 International sea level data at the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC)
The international sea level data available from BODC are a combination of data collected under the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), the Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) and the Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) programmes.
WOCE data assembly started in early 1991 and the work continued until 2002.
